Animals including chickens, cows, fishes, pigs, sheep, bees etc. have emotions and are capable of feeling pain, fear and anxiety. The concept of ethical veganism encompasses taking a stance against inhumane practices and torturous act on animals by factory farms. It is known that chickens bred for food have their beaks removed without any anaesthesia, dairy cows are forcibly impregnated with metal rods to produce milk for human consumption, mothering pigs are exploited as breeding tool for more pigs by being forcibly impregnated over and over again. Animals from range-free and organic farms are not exempted from cruel living conditions, social isolation and exploitation as well, often being confined in overcrowded, bacteria-laden and unliveable spaces for long duration of time.

Meat production uses up 12 times more land, 13 times more fossil fuel and 15 times more water than plant protein. Animal agriculture is responsible for 51% of greenhouse gas emissions, significantly more than the combined exhaust fumes from all transportation (13%). A farm with 2,500 dairy cows produces the same amount of waste as a city of 411,000 people. Worldwide, at least 50% of grain is fed to livestock. Livestock & livestock feed occupies 1/3 of the earth’s ice-free land, covering 45% of total land. How could the environment be sustainable if this goes on?

As a result from the environmental factors mentioned above, animal agriculture is the leading cause of species endangerment, ocean dead zone, water pollution and habitat destruction. Lands cleared to make way for animal agriculture, commercial fishing techniques deployed unscrupulously, waste from large-scale farming released into water are all unethical practices that lead to the demise of vulnerable species  on Earth.

By adopting a plant-based diet, there is a reduced risk of Type-2 diabetes by 68%, cardiovascular diseases by 32% and all forms of cancer by 18%. It is also easier to maintain healthier BMI scores, alleviate migraine and allergy symptoms. It is also easier to maintain mindfulness and less drowsiness after a plant-based meal in comparison to one with meat protein. This is because a plant-based diet is less taxing on the human body, in addition to the amazing phytonutrients that come with having wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

Recent studies have found that bulking up on plant protein is actually more effective than that of meat protein for one to be fit or to be a successful athlete. Athletes and gym enthusiasts have cited veganism as the reason behind the extra boost of energy and faster recovery times. Vegan strongman Patrik Baboumian broke the world record in 2013 for the most weight ever carried by a human being, lugging 1,216 lbs. (552kg) across 10 meters. Vegan ironmen Jason Lester and Rich Roll finished each triathlon on a different Hawaiian island in seven days, something that had never been done before. Plant-based boxer Cam F. Awesome has been a tournament-winning machine since going vegan in 2012, and he has now won more medals than any American in amateur boxing history.
